Google Meet now posts AI meeting recaps into Google Chat, switched on by default

Google's AI note-taker now drops a short summary of each call, with decisions and actions, into the chat linked to the meeting. Users can't turn it off, but one meeting setting can stop it.

Google Meet now posts AI meeting recaps into Google Chat, switched on by default

What happened

On Monday 19 October 2026, Google announced that Google Meet's AI note-taker ("Take notes for me", powered by Gemini) will automatically post a recap card into the meeting's linked Google Chat conversation when the call ends.

Each card summarises the main discussion topics and takeaways, then lists key decisions and action items "with designated owners". It links to the full Gemini meeting notes document, recording and transcript. Colleagues who missed the call or joined late can catch up in the meeting's Chat conversation. The recap is generated when "Take notes for me" is active during the call and a meeting chat conversation exists.

For admins, the feature is on by default in organisations with Gemini for Google Workspace. It honours existing "Take notes for me" and Gemini admin policies. For everyone else, Google's wording is blunt: "There is no end-user setting for this feature." And the cards arrive silently, without bolding the conversation or adding an unread badge.

Rapid Release domains began a gradual rollout, taking up to 15 days, on 16 October 2026. For Workspace organisations on Scheduled Release, rollout starts on 27 October 2026 and also takes up to 15 days. Google lists Business Standard and Business Plus, along with Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus. Frontline Plus is covered too. Business Starter isn't listed.

What it means for a small business

After a sales call or a supplier call, the actions and owners now sit in the chat where people already talk. That's useful, and it makes follow-through more likely.

The risk is who sees the card. Everyone in the meeting's chat conversation gets it, including people who weren't on the call. A summary of a pay review, a staff issue, a customer complaint or a pricing discussion could reach them. Notes about staff or customers are personal data worth treating carefully; check with your adviser if you're unsure.

A Gemini summary can get a decision or an owner wrong. Because the card arrives silently, nobody may read it closely. Any participant can delete a card through More options, the three dots, then Delete. Deleting the card removes the summary from the chat. The original notes document stays in Google Drive.

One Meet setting controls whether the recap reaches the group chat. If the host sets "Send notes to" to "Hosts and co-hosts only", no recap card is posted there. We covered the "Take notes for me" settings earlier in our guide to Meet's note-taking settings.

What you can do this week

  1. Check your Workspace plan and whether your organisation uses Rapid or Scheduled Release. Whoever looks after your Google admin will know. The release schedule tells you roughly when recaps will start appearing.
  2. For sensitive meetings (HR, pay, customer complaints, pricing), set "Send notes to" to "Hosts and co-hosts only" before the call starts.
  3. Before turning on "Take notes for me", check who's in the meeting's chat. If someone there shouldn't see the discussion, rethink the setting or the chat.
  4. Read the recap after a call. Correct any wrong decision or owner in the chat, or delete the card if it shouldn't be there. The notes document still stays in Google Drive.
  5. Tell your team that recaps arrive silently, with no bold text or unread badge, so they know to look for their actions.
