What happened

On 15 September 2026, Google announced that AI Overviews in Gmail search (the feature that lets you type a natural-language question into the Gmail search bar and get back a concise summary rather than a list of matching emails) is expanding to paid users worldwide, provided their Gmail language is set to English. Until now this had been limited to users in the US. Business Starter, Standard and Plus customers are all in scope.

The rollout is happening in the usual two waves. Rapid Release domains began seeing the feature earlier in September, and Scheduled Release domains (common for SMBs that haven't opted into early access) get the full rollout starting 21 September 2026, with visibility expected to reach users within one to three days of that date.

Google's own announcement, including the eligibility detail and rollout timeline, is here: Gmail Search's AI Overviews now available globally.

What it means for a small business

Time. If staff learn a few useful query patterns (for example asking where the last quote to a named client is, or when an invoice or delivery date was agreed), AI Overviews can cut down the time spent scrolling through long threads.

Cost. There's no separate add-on to buy. The feature draws on the same Gemini for Workspace and smart-features infrastructure already included with the paid Business plans, so it's a case of switching something on rather than signing up for something new. It is, however, subject to usage limits.

Risk. The feature is default-on wherever Gemini in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail are already enabled for an organisational unit, so it may already be active without anyone having deliberately turned it on. It's worth noting this is a Workspace Business feature. Consumer personal accounts in the UK are excluded from the equivalent Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra consumer offering, so Workspace Business is the relevant path for SMBs.

Customer expectations. This is an internal productivity tool, not a customer-facing chatbot. It's built to help your team find things faster internally. It isn't designed to draft or send responses to customers on its own, and it shouldn't be treated as one.

Eligibility, in full. To see AI Overviews in Gmail search, a business needs: a paid plan (Business Starter, Standard or Plus), Gmail language set to English, smart features enabled in Gmail, Chat and Meet, and Google Workspace smart features switched on at the organisation level.

What you can do this week

  1. Get admin confirmation. Ask whoever manages your Google Workspace admin console to check whether Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail are switched on or off for your organisational units.
  2. Run three real test searches. Have the business owner or an ops lead try genuine, work-relevant queries ("find our last quote for [client]", "which invoice is still unpaid from [supplier]", "what delivery date did we agree with [customer]") and note where the AI Overview got it right and where it didn't.
  3. Brief the team. Cover how to phrase a useful search, when it's worth opening the original email rather than trusting the summary, and that nobody should paste an AI Overview straight into a reply to a client without checking it against the source email first.
