ChatGPT Free vs Plus vs Business: what should a small business pay for?

How to choose between ChatGPT Free, Plus and Business

Most small businesses overpay or underbuy on ChatGPT for the same reason: they pick a plan based on price rather than on who is using it and what data is going into it. This guide gives you a straightforward way to decide, in about ten minutes, without guessing.

The short version:

  • Solo, still learning, occasional use → start on Free.
  • One person using it most working days → Plus.
  • A team, customer data, or anyone who needs admin control → Business.

Prices change, so we don't quote them here. Check current pricing on OpenAI's business pricing page (https://openai.com/business/pricing/) and on https://chatgpt.com/ before you commit.

Who this is for

  • Owners and directors of UK and Ireland SMBs who already use ChatGPT a bit and now need to decide what to pay for.
  • Marketing, sales and ops managers who want two or three colleagues on the same setup.
  • Anyone who has been told "just put it on the company card" and wants to know whether the paid tier is actually earning its keep.
  • Anyone worried about staff pasting customer information into a personal account.

If you have never opened ChatGPT at all, start with Free and come back to this guide in a fortnight.

What it does (in plain English)

The three tiers are not three different products. They are the same assistant with different limits, different admin controls, and - importantly - different default rules about your data.
